Macross Frontier

the 25-year-old mecha franchise's newest iteration

Macross Frontier

 ART

is so promising in every way early on that it remains entertaining even as the issues grow more obvious and threaten to obstruct the series.
Nonetheless, despite the series' flaws, it is ultimately a worthwhile watch.  Frontier's appeal stems from the fact that it maintains the Macross mythos while never alienating new viewers.
Frontier is a great stand-alone story that nonetheless ties nicely with the previous series before it, bringing with it all the tropes and plot elements that constitute the Macross universe.
Frontier also succeeds in incorporating as many red herrings as possible.
This is sure to keep the audience guessing and suspicious of any obvious story twist.
However, viewers may be dissatisfied later on if some story twists turn out to be exactly as they predicted.

CAST

Frontier's cast is one of those red herrings.
The characters appear to be new, energetic, and engaging at first, but this is a falsehood since about a quarter of the way through, they all become limited one-dimensional personas, and some, like the tragic case of main character Alto, remain that way throughout the series.
Frontier also has a wide cast of characters to begin with.
Because Ranka and Sheryl are given so much time, many members of the cast will go unnoticed for multiple episodes.
As a result, outside of an episode dedicated to a single character, the series fails to thoroughly develop anyone's character.

Yoko Kanno's OST

The sound emphasis falls mainly on newbies Megumi Nakajima and May'n, who contribute their singing abilities to Ranka and Sheryl, respectively, giving us a jukebox's worth of catchy tracks each with their own particular style, despite Yoko Kanno's OST not being one of her finest efforts.
There's plenty to keep your ears happy throughout the series, from the viral Deculture jingle to the mournful "Diamond Crevasse" to the surrealistic bubblegum pop of "What 'Bout My Star."

Macross Frontier had characters who irked me to no end, but thanks to a solid story, stunning animation, and memorable music, I was able to tolerate them long enough to finish the series with a smile on my face.
If you're unfamiliar with the long-running Macross franchise, this latest installment provides enough compelling components to convince you to check out the others.
It certainly has for me.
